SESSION 6: Obeying God

1. Welcome each other to your small group.

2. Share your name and your response to this introductory sharing question:

  • What is the first word that comes to mind if someone were to say to you, "Obedience?"

3. Sharing Questions

  • How do you react to the following quotation from the book (see page 73)?

"Obeying God goes far deeper than just keeping some rules for good living.  It has to do with our responses to God's prompts to do something as a result of listening for him and listening to him.  How we respond can often have a significant impact on our spiritual growth."

  • How do you react to the story of Lori on pages 80-81?
  • What would you attempt for God if you were sure you could not fail?

4. Prayer

  • Have each person in the group share what part of the prayer at the end of chapter 6 they would like to be prayed for them.
  • Pray what the person to your right has asked for prayer.

5. Assignment for next week

  • Read chapter 7 and think about what stood out to you in this chapter.
  • Questions to think about:
    • How do you react to the following quotation from Bruce Larson: "The Gospel is embodied in a person affirming us:  Jesus Christ saying, 'I love you unconditionally.  Will you give me your life?' ... We can only say 'yes' or 'no.'  To say yes is to return affirmation with affirmation.  We affirm God by yielding to him, even as He had affirmed us by giving us himself in the person of Jesus Christ."
    • Do you have a sense that God might be inviting you to do something?
    • Do you wish to obey the prompts of God in your life?
    • Do you long to know the love of God for you even when you fail to follow his prompts?
